Walking is not just for retired runners. Race walking is an excellent low-impact alternative to running. Gauteng has an active race walking community with several dedicated walking races during the year including a 10Km race alongside of our August half marathon.
Randburg Harriers has the oldest dedicated walking section in the region with members regularly ‘bringing home the silver’.
Walkers take part in the club time trials on Thursdays at 17h45, completing 5 km and on Saturday mornings at 06h45 (NOTE: This is 15 minutes earlier than the runners) completing the same 8 km course as the runners.
A walking clinic is held on the first Saturday of each month starting at 07h00 on the cricket field for both beginners and intermediate walkers. This clinic is also excellent for runners who are looking to improve their hill walking.
Each year walking races (including our two helper’s races) are nominated for the Charles Dale Trophy. The trophy is awarded to the walker completing 5 of these events in the fastest time overall. The nominated races for 2010 are:

The Walker of the Year Trophy is presented annually to a walker who is an active club member, but is not necessarily a top walker. The Rowan Dunstan Memorial trophy is awarded to a person showing courage and determination in their walking. The Long Distance trophies (ladies and gents) are awarded to the best time for the Discovery/702 30Km Walk the Talk in July.
